CLIENT STORIES

"When I first contacted Dr. Young I felt like food was my enemy. I had given up all the things that are supposed to be bad for you: fast food, fried foods, ice cream & baked goods, alcohol, etc. But I was still gaining weight. Meeting with Dr. Young and learning what my body needs and how to work that into a fast-paced lifestyle has made a tremendous difference. As a busy and competitive person I find that making a "game" out of nutrition has really helped, so that each week I compete against myself to get closer & closer to right amount of fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy, and grains. She also gave me permission to do things the easy way by using frozen or canned fruits and vegetables that are easier to keep around the house and faster to prepare. Hearing an expert say that healthy food doesn't have to be difficult, and that a piece of chocolate or a can of coke now and again  isn't "cheating," makes a world of difference. I finally have control over something that has made me feel so helpless in the past."

I have severe allergies to corn, soy, and several other common food additives. In the past, when I successfully avoided the allergens, my nutrient consumption suffered. Dr. Young was recommended to me by my general practitioner after some alarming test results that indicated my health was in real trouble. Dr. Young has a strong background in allergy-related food illnesses. She has taught me how to find hidden allergens and how to seek out food without allergens. She has put me on a plan that allows me to live a normal life that includes eating out. She even managed to figure out a way for me to make allergen-free peppermint patties! For the first time in years, after countless allergists, dermatologists, and emergency room visits, I feel confident that I can eat food that will not cause a reaction and I can remain healthy. My quality of life has improved dramatically since becoming a patient of Dr. Young.

As the Community Coordinator for Earth Fare, a natural and specialty foods grocery store in Athens GA, part of my job is to book speakers in the community that are knowledgeable about topics our customers are interested in.  As these seminars are offered as a free service to our customers, it is often hard to get people to commit to these presentations-which is understandable in today's busy world! Dr. Young approached me herself, and was interested in presenting a talk on food allergies, with celiac disease and gluten intolerance as the primary focus. Celiac Disease is fairly common among both adults and children, and yet very few people even know what it means.  Also, once diagnosed, people with celiac disease have no idea of what they can and can't eat, and their new diet seems extremely restrictive, which can be depressing and overwhelming.  Dr. Young's first talk drew about 20 people, and that turnout alone let me know that her presentation was a much needed  service in the community.  I received so much positive feedback from her first seminar, that I asked her back for another! Dr. Young's seminar was very helpful for Earth Fare also, because we do carry many gluten free products, and  have entire sections for baking ingredients, pastas, and cereals that are celiac-friendly.  She brought more awareness to these products, and through word of mouth, the attendees definitely helped us to increase our sales in that area.  As someone with food allergies, Dr. Young is compassionate and knows what she is talking about on a very personal level, and I think that is important for a nutritionist, as everyone loves food!  I always appreciated
the service Dr. Young provided to our customers.
